Supporting the locals in Baltimore!

February 9, 2012

Having both grown up in the same small town (awwwwww), Brandon and I try really hard to make sure we support the small local businesses as opposed to the larger companies.

For this reason we love to hit the local fav pizza shops on the weekends (and lets be realz, better pizza, hands down, sorry Papa Johns), the locally owned non-chain delis and restaurants, the mom & pop gas stations when we can and of course, the local market.

This past weekend, I was lucky enough to enjoy an afternoon at the Heavy Seas Oyster and Beer festival.  Lots of piraty goodness, but for a vegetarian, not a lot to eat.  Until I came upon this magic…

Is it possible to eat a picture??

This picture, does the deliciousness that is in my fridge no justice.  What you are looking at is locally made White chocolate Spice Berry bark that is chock-a-block FULL of dried fruit, cacao nibs and crystallized ginger.  From, get this, a local company.

Enter: Parfections

Parfections is a local to Baltimore company, that makes some DIVINE chocolates.  I camped out at their table for a better part of the afternoon last Saturday and tested several of their chocolate concoctions.  I’ve always loved white chocolate, so a baggie of these came home with me 🙂

I also brought home a box of Beer Infused Truffles.  For serious, guys.  BEER INFUSED TRUFFLES.  They are literally a small piece of heaven in your mouth.  The owner/maker of the chocolates prides herself (and rightfully so!) on using fresh ingredients like fruits, herbs and spices to blend with her chocolates.  The goal, is to create perfect chocolates each time she makes them.  The chocolates are made in small batches to ensure the best quality. And I have to say, no complaints here!  I love the story of how the owner, Kim, used to make chocolates with her grandmother and is now making her own chocolates, right here in Baltimore!  Luckily for anyone outside of MD, they also have an online store that you can order chocolates from, if you so desire.

I think i’ve found a new go-to place for when I have a sweet craving.  I nibble slowly, but some times its hard!  Although, as a native Lancasterian (Is that a word?) I will always have a special place in my heart for that “great American chocolate bar”, Hershey’s Chocolate, I’m really excited to try some more chocolates from Parfections also.  Like what, you ask?

Well, from their truffles section I am drooling over everything – but for the sake of your sanity, I will TRY to narrow it down… (all of the below descriptions and images can be found in the link to the left 🙂 )

“Pomegranate & Lime:  Fresh pomegranate combined with lime in a white chocolate center then covered in white chocolate and topped with lime sugar.”

“Painkiller: Named after that famous Caribbean Cocktail! Milk chocolate center with coconut milk, orange, pineapple, dark rum & nutmeg covered with milk chocolate and rolled in crushed banana chips. Flavors sure to evoke white sand beaches, crystal clear water and beautiful sunsets.”

“Mediterranean Madness: Dark chocolate combined with aged balsamic vinegar to form a tangy flavored center that has hints of cherry and grape. The center is dipped in dark chocolate. Truly amazing!”

“Lemon Grove: White chocolate center infused with natural Lemon & Limoncello Liqueur then dipped in dark chocolate and topped with lemon sugar.”

“Yin Yang Its unique flavor comes from combining the subtle character of Japanese Sake, the biting taste of wasabi root and the complex sweetness of dark chocolate. Enrobed in dark chocolate and half is rolled in toasted sesame seeds”

“Agave Latte Dark Chocolate infused with Patron XO Cafe—tequila based coffee liqueur. Enrobed in White chocolate & topped with roasted coffee beans. Award Winner”

EVERY. SINGLE.  ONE. Of their seasonals.

Mojito Mint Mojito Mint A dark chocolate center infused with fresh mint, lime, brown sugar & fine rum. The center is then dipped in dark chocolate and topped with lime sugar.
Pineapple & Rum Pineapple & Rum White chocolate infused with pineapple puree, fine Dark Rum and bits of dried pineapple then dipped in dark chocolate and topped with a piece of dried pineapple.
Cranberry & Walnut Cranberry & Walnut White Chocolate center infused with cranberry puree and walnuts. Dipped in milk chocolate and topped with pieces of dried cranberry and walnut.
Spiced Cider Pumpkin Spice Milk & Dark Chocolate Blend combined with Fresh Pumpkin Puree, ginger, nutmeg & cloves. Enrobed in Milk Chocolate.
Peppermint Peppermint A Blend of Dark & White Chocolate infused with natural Peppermint flavor & pieces of Peppermint candy. Enrobed in White Chocolate & topped with Chocolate Shavings

Are they not the most gorgeous pieces of chocolate you have ever seen?  Its sort’ve hard to eat them.  But only sort’ve.   I also really want to try their chocolate dipped fruit.

Most of all, I love the flavor combinations.  What better way to be inspired, than by something delicious!?

ps – all opinions are MY OWN and I was not compensated in any way to write this post.  I just really really really enjoyed their chocolates 🙂
